Military Family Caregivers
Military family caregivers stand on the frontlines of aging and resilience, caring for loved ones with visible and invisible wounds of service while managing their own well-being. Their experiences reveal critical gaps in healthcare, policy, and community support systems.
According to a RAND study, more than 14 million Americans are caring for our nation’s heroes, and nearly three-quarters are caring for someone over the age of 60, underscoring the growing need for targeted resources, training, and community-based support for this population.Supporting Military Caregivers
SDSU CEAL and PsychArmor are collaborating to examine how military caregiving intersects with aging, trauma, dementia, and complex health systems. This partnership highlights the vital role of caregivers and aims to develop innovative, community-driven solutions to enhance the support and resources they need.

Key Areas of Focus
The collaboration focuses on several key areas to strengthen support for military family caregivers. It examines caregiving across generations, exploring how military caregiving intersects with aging, from young spouses to adult children caring for aging veterans. It addresses critical system gaps by identifying barriers in healthcare, policy, and community services and developing collaborative solutions. The initiative also elevates lived experience as expertise, ensuring that caregiver voices inform programs and shape more responsive, equitable services. Finally, it emphasizes training and peer support, expanding culturally competent caregiver education, peer networks, and resources for military-connected communities.
