Ageism Awareness Day is an opportunity to reflect on the biases and stereotypes that society holds about older adults and to promote a more inclusive and respectful view of aging. At the SDSU Center for Excellence in Aging & Longevity (CEAL), we are committed to combating ageism by fostering intergenerational connections through innovative programs.
Ageism is a pervasive form of discrimination that affects how people are perceived and treated based on age. It manifests in various ways, from derogatory stereotypes and social exclusion to barriers in employment and healthcare. These negative attitudes not only harm older individuals but also undermine the richness of their contributions to society.
We believe that addressing ageism requires both awareness and action. We strive to create a community where older adults are valued and respected, and their voices are heard. Our approach includes education, advocacy, and the implementation of programs designed to break down the barriers of age-based prejudice.
One of our flagship initiatives is the Intergenerational CallHub, a program designed to connect older adults with student volunteers through regular phone calls. This program has proven to be an effective tool in combating loneliness and isolation among older adults while fostering meaningful connections across generations.
The Intergenerational CallHub offers several key benefits. Regular social interaction can provide a lifeline for many who may feel disconnected from their communities. Through these interactions, students gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the experiences and wisdom of older adults, helping to challenge and change the negative stereotypes associated with aging. Both generations benefit from this exchange, as older adults share their life experiences and wisdom, while students bring fresh perspectives and enthusiasm, creating a rich, reciprocal learning environment. The bonds formed through the CallHub foster empathy and bridge the gap between generations.
As we celebrate Ageism Awareness Day, we reaffirm our commitment to fighting ageism and promoting intergenerational programs that create a more age-inclusive society where people of all ages are valued and respected. We are dedicated to continuing this important work and expanding our initiatives to reach more individuals. We invite you to join us in our efforts to combat ageism and build a community where every person, regardless of age, can thrive.
